Will Welch
Some British residents and the Anglican Church in Lima have been helping to look after a British citizen, Will Welch, who suffered a serious fall earlier in the year which left him in a coma. He is recovering, is now conscious, his condition is stable and he needs to be taken back to Britain.
Will was invited to volunteer building a “green” energy generating device in Tarapoto with an organisation called Keshe. When he arrived they were making upgrades to the building to make it into a production office for building the energy devices and rooms for staff and living areas. Will was coming down a ladder from the top floor, fell backwards through the first floor ceiling tiles and onto the ground floor.
His insurance arrangements did not cover such a case, and the funds he has available do not cover the whole of his own fare plus that of two assistants who are required to travel with him. But he needs to be flown back to the UK to receive appropriate care.
Will has been certified as ‘fit to fly’ by British Airways, and needs only to raise the cost of his own fare and those of two assistants required to accompany him. As he cannot sit up for the whole trip, he will need to fly in Business Class.
Will’s support group in Lima is requesting contributions from the British community towards the fares for getting him home. There are many British residents living in Lima now, and a small contribution from each can make this possible.
The British Benevolent Society of Peru and the Social Work Committee at the Good Shepherd Cathedral are supervising this fund.

If you can make a donation, please do so via the Good Shepherd Cathedral bank account below, and email the voucher details, stating that the donation is for Will Welch, as there is no separate account.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Best regards,
Rosemary Underhay

Current situation 1st January 2017:
Since June of 2016, Will was in an old people’s home receiving basic non-clinical care after being discharged from the Dos de Mayo general ward.  In December, Will was transferred to the personal home of a British (Scottish) registered nurse, Frances Clark, who will be accompanying him on his repatriation flight back to England on January 18th on a direct British Airways flight with her daughter Denise assisting.  He is receiving round the clock attention from agency nurses who are keeping him in a “fit to fly” condition to manage the 16-18 hour transit time back to London, Gatwick.  He was declared “fit to fly” by a local doctor approved by the Foreign Office.
We have secured flight funds and bought the tickets, but still need ongoing support to pay for the visiting agency nurses, oxygen, IV bags, daipers and food until he is on the plane back to England. We may need to pay for a private ambulance for him to be taken to his designated hospital so every little donation helps.
