In October this year we started our very first English conversation class, the idea was for us to add something more to the community here in Lima besides our book sales and Christmas bazaar.
One of our English leaders who is a retired teacher says he could not resist in offering to help as it was a great way for us to interact with the community and he has found the students really appreciative, he says "Some of the students even bring cakes and sandwiches to have with the coffee and tea. This enthusiasm encourages you to do your best for the students."
Each session varies in topic and activity but the main objective is that the students will practice and build confidence in their spoken English, as well as enhancing listening, pronunciation skills and building up vocabulary then being able to transfer these new words into everyday English. Even though the classes are attached to the Anglican Church this fact is not mentioned and religion is not mentioned at all during classes. And as a bonus the teachers are native from England and the USA!
Our students have various reason for learning English, whilst many require it for their career, others have grandchildren in English schools then some just want to learn to be fluent for travel. One said "As soon as I come into the classroom I completely disconnect from the world, I am totally enjoying my class", and another said "I enjoy everything about the class, we are like a family. I feel totally comfortable".
As well as the classes, the students were invited to join us for a thanksgiving potluck dinner in November. We had over 40 of them join us, it was a wonderful evening.
We ended the year for a Christmas break and so many of our students came along with some amazing treats!
We are so happy everyone is enjoying the classes, we hope they continue for a long while! If you or someone you know wants to improve their English, tell them to come along!
Classes for 2019 continue on Wednesday and Saturday mornings 10am-12noon from 2nd January
