For the last 8 years the Cathedral, together with San Silvestre School, has organized a Christmas Box project, sending shoes boxes to children in different parts of Peru. Each person participating receives the name and age of a child from one of the lists received, and prepares a shoe box containing items under four categories:
Once these have been prepared they are checked at the Cathedral by a team, and sorted according to destination. They are then transported to their destinations, and distributed. Before the boxes are distributed, each child receives a colouring booklet entitled “What is Christmas?” which is explained to the children. After this the children are usually given a chocolatada and as they leave they receive their boxes.
This year we are sending a total of 361 boxes to:
-Pucará, Ayacucho (a tiny village in the high Andes)
-Llaquepata, Cusco (high Andes)
-Women´s Prison in Cusco (6 children aged under 3, living in the prison with their mothers)
-Condado Pichilikiari, Chanchamayo, Junin
-Tunanmarca, Huancayo, Junin (high Andes)
-Some families in the Ines Health Project which Works with families with children with difficult health conditions (usually disabilities)
Whilst the boxes are provided, there are other ways you can help:
If you would like to give a donation to cover transportation costs, chocolatadas, etc, please give to the office in a marked envelope.
Last year we spent S/.943 on transport and S/.606 on chocolatadas for 340 children.
